For cattle producers, it matters for one primary reason: energy. Native pastures in the dry season drop sharply in quality. Protein falls, digestibility falls, and cattle start burning body condition to stay alive, then molasses steps in as a fast, palatable energy source that keeps the rumen ticking over.

Benefits of Molasses for Cattle

Energy supplementation

The core job of molasses is energy delivery. When dry-season pastures drop below 6% crude protein, and cattle can no longer maintain liveweight on grass alone, molasses provides rapidly available sugars that fuel rumen microbes and keep animals out of negative energy balance.

MLA research found that high-molasses diets in intensive feeding systems can support average daily gains of 1.2 to 1.7 kg/day – comparable to grain-based feedlot rations when the mix is properly fortified.

For grazing cattle, the goal is more modest: maintain condition, prevent weight loss, and keep breeders cycling. Even at 2–3 kg/day of a fortified mix, cows in the late dry season can hold their condition score through to the wet.

Palatability and feed intake

Molasses is sweet. Cattle find it highly palatable, which makes it an effective carrier and attractant for less palatable ingredients like urea, protein meals, and minerals.

Research shows that adding a molasses-urea mix to a low-quality hay ration increases hay intake by around 39% compared to hay alone. That’s not a trivial number. When you’re feeding expensive hay in a dry year, getting cattle to eat more of it is real money.

Dust suppression in dry feeds

How to Feed Molasses to Cattle

Lick blocks

Molasses-based lick blocks are the simplest delivery method. The molasses acts as a binder and attractant, holding together minerals, urea, salt, and protein sources in a solid block.

Intake from lick blocks is self-limiting – the hardness of the block and the bitterness of urea slow consumption. This makes them a practical low-labour option for large paddocks where trough feeding isn’t feasible.

The trade-off is the cost per kilogram of nutrient delivered. Blocks are more expensive than bulk liquid mixes on a nutrient basis.

Roller drums

Roller drums were the traditional method for delivering liquid molasses-urea mixes across Queensland. A drum is filled with a diluted molasses-urea-water mix, and cattle lick the drum as it rolls.

The dilution slows intake and reduces the risk of gorging. A typical roller drum mix for 100 cows for one week: 150 kg molasses + 225 L water + 35 kg urea + 2.5 kg Gran-am (ammonium sulphate).

Roller drums have largely been replaced by trough feeding in most operations, due to the cost of maintaining drums and distribution vehicles. They remain useful in remote paddocks.

Trough feeding (bulk liquid supplement)

Trough feeding is the most common method on properties running large numbers. A bulk storage tank holds the mixed supplement; a distribution tanker or truck delivers it to paddock troughs weekly.

Key logistics points:

  • Troughs should hold enough supplement to last one full week between fill-ups.
  • Provide enough trough space so all animals in a mob can access the supplement – dominant animals will exclude smaller or weaker cattle if space is tight.
  • Shift throughs regularly to prevent soil damage and weed establishment around feeding sites.
  • One thousand breeders on M8U will consume approximately 15 tonnes of molasses and 1.2 tonnes of urea per week – plan storage accordingly.

Mixed into pellets or grain

Molasses is widely used as a binder and palatability enhancer in manufactured supplements – pellets, loose licks, and grain mixes. In feedlot rations, it can make up to 17% of the total diet.

At these inclusion rates, it’s not being used primarily as an energy supplement but as a processing aid and feed attractant. The energy contribution is a bonus.

Molasses Limitations: What It Can’t Do Alone

Protein deficiency

This is the critical one. Molasses contain only around 5% crude protein. Cattle on dry-season native pastures are already protein-deficient. Feeding straight molasses into a protein-deficient system makes the problem worse, not better.

Not a standalone drought supplement

  • Molasses toxicity (“molasses drunkenness” ): Vitamin B is destroyed when the rumen flow rate is too slow. Animals stagger and appear blind. Treatment is a Vitamin B injection or access to green feed.
  • Molasses bloat: Frothy bloat caused by rapid fermentation of the high-sugar liquid. It can be fatal.

Intake control challenges

Cattle don’t self-regulate molasses intake the way they do with dry licks. In a drought year, when pasture is short, and cattle are hungry, intake can spike well above target levels – sometimes exceeding 9 kg/head/day.

High intake without adequate roughage causes the syndromes above. It also blows out supplement costs rapidly. Intake control strategies – salt inclusion, urea bitterness in M8U mixes, roller drums, or controlled trough access – are not optional. They’re essential.

Fortified Molasses Mixes: Adding Urea and Protein

The standard fortified mixes used across North Queensland are well-established. Here’s a practical summary:

M8U (Molasses + 8% urea) The workhorse dry-season supplement. Per tonne of molasses: 87 kg prilled urea. The 8% urea level makes the mix bitter, which self-limits intake and reduces the risk of gorging. Suitable for cows, first-calf heifers, steers, and weaners over 150 kg.

MUP (Molasses + Urea + Protein meal) is the production supplement. Per tonne of molasses: 40 kg urea + 60–100 kg protein meal (copra, PKE, or soybean) + 10 kg salt + 10 kg phosphorus source + 500 g Rumensin® 100 Premix. Used for growing weaners over 100 kg and finishing cattle. Targets daily gains of at least 0.6 kg/day; well-managed operations have recorded over 1 kg/day.

MP (Molasses + Protein meal) For young weaners under 150 kg, where the property doesn’t have a mechanical mixer to dissolve urea safely. Per tonne of molasses: 100 kg protein meal. Lower performance than MUP but safer for small weaners.

Critical mixing rules:

  • Always use prilled urea, not granulated. Prilled urea dissolves approximately four times faster.
  • Mix mechanically for a minimum of 30 minutes – many operators run for over an hour.
  • Never dilute with water before or after mixing. Water contamination causes fermentation and spoilage, and can concentrate undissolved urea to lethal levels if rain falls on the mix.
  • If rain falls on a mixed batch, bail off the water from the top – do not stir it in.

Phosphorus sources used in mixes include dicalcium phosphate (DCP), kynofos, MDCP, or technical-grade monoammonium phosphate (MAP) at around 10 kg per tonne of molasses.

The key practical difference: grain delivers more energy per kilogram but carries a real acidosis risk if cattle aren’t adapted. Molasses is safer to introduce, more palatable, and easier to blend with other ingredients but you need roughly 1.4 kg of grain to match the energy in 2 kg of molasses on an as-fed basis.

For maintenance feeding of breeders in the dry season, molasses-urea mixes are generally the preferred tool in Queensland. For intensive finishing or crisis recovery of very poor cattle, grain often becomes necessary.

Hay is a roughage base, not an energy supplement. It must always be present when feeding molasses, but it won’t replace the energy or protein that molasses-urea mixes provide.

Common Mistakes When Feeding Molasses to Cattle

1. Feeding straight molasses without urea or protein. The most common error. Molasses alone provides energy to a protein-deficient system. Rumen function doesn’t improve. Cattle don’t perform. Money is wasted.

2. Using granulated urea instead of prilled urea. Granulated urea dissolves far more slowly. Undissolved urea concentrates in the top layer of the mix. Cattle that drink the surface layer can receive a lethal dose. Always use prilled urea.

3. Not mixing long enough. Thirty minutes minimum in a mechanical mixer. Many operators run for over an hour. Cutting this short leaves undissolved urea in the mix – a genuine toxicity risk.

4. Diluting with water or mixing in the rain. Water causes fermentation and spoilage. Rain falling on an open trough of M8U can concentrate urea at the surface. Bail off any rainwater immediately – never stir it in.

5. Feeding without adequate roughage. Molasses without dry matter in the rumen lead to molasses toxicity or bloat. Both can be fatal. Roughage is not optional.

6. Intermittent feeding of high-urea mixes. Keeping M8U in front of cattle continuously is safer than feeding it every few days. Cattle that go without and then gorge on a high-urea mix are at serious risk of urea toxicity. If you’re going to feed M8U, keep it available.
