Early-weaned beef calves need more than simply “something to eat.” Young calves have high nutritional requirements but limited intake capacity, so the feed they consume needs to be palatable, nutrient-dense, and appropriate for their stage of digestive development.
For calves under about 120kg, the feeding program should generally focus on high-quality protein and energy, suitable roughage, clean water, gradual diet adaptation, and consistent feed access. The younger and lighter the calf, the more carefully that program needs to be managed.
A practical early-weaning diet should provide:
MLA guidance says early-weaned calves require high-quality feed containing more than 11.5 MJ ME/kg DM and at least 15% crude protein, particularly around the 100kg early-weaning stage. Those figures are useful nutritional benchmarks not a recipe for every property.
A small calf cannot compensate for poor-quality feed simply by eating enormous amounts of it.
FutureBeef explains that early-weaned calves may not yet have a fully functioning rumen, so their ability to use low-quality fibrous feed is different from that of mature cattle. Grain-based, readily digestible nutrition can therefore play an important role alongside suitable roughage as the rumen continues developing.
This is why a paddock that is adequate for mature cows may not automatically provide enough nutrition for a young early-weaned calf. Calf liveweight, age and digestive development all matter. Very small calves need particularly careful management. Current FutureBeef guidance notes that calves under roughly 60kg may still require milk replacer in addition to high-quality calf feed, so extremely young or light calves should not simply be placed onto a standard dry-feed program without qualified advice.
Protein gets plenty of attention on a feed label, but protein alone does not grow the calf.
Protein provides building blocks for developing muscle and tissue, while energy supports maintenance, movement, temperature regulation, and growth.

Protein supplies the steel. Energy pays for the machinery and crew.
You need both.
MLA’s early-weaning guidance recommends nutrient-dense feed above 11.5 MJ ME/kg DM and 15% crude protein for successfully managing early-weaned calves around 100kg. The whole ration should still be considered rather than selecting feed based on one impressive number.
Concentrate feed does not make roughage irrelevant. Good-quality pasture or hay helps support normal rumen development and feeding behaviour.
FutureBeef recommends quality hay at the beginning of the early-weaning period to help calves start eating quickly, while its broader weaning guidance states that hay alone is not enough for young calves.
Avoid assuming any bale will do.

Water is easy to overlook because it does not arrive in an expensive feed bag.
But calves that do not drink properly will not use the rest of the ration properly either. Provide clean, reliable water from troughs that small calves can comfortably reach. Agriculture Victoria specifically recommends clean water troughs and high-quality feed during early weaning. Check refill rate as well as trough capacity, particularly during hot weather.
Early weaning already creates stress.
Avoid adding an abrupt feed change at the same time. FutureBeef advises against suddenly changing the amount or type of feed because rumen microorganisms need time to adapt. It also recommends separating smaller calves where necessary to reduce bullying and uneven access.
